9th Grade Science

*SC 09 Essential Elements of Science
Difficulty: Average 2 Sem.—1 Cr
Prerequisites: See counselor for prerequisite
SC 09 is a capstone science course at the junior high level and provides the conceptual foundation for the MPS high school science curriculum. Students in SC 09
receive instruction and practice in developing and refining scientific skills and methods which are prerequisites for success in subsequent science classes. Using chemistry, physics, and astronomy concepts as a framework, students in SC 09 discover and collect evidence that supports the atomic/molecular theory of matter. These principles lay the groundwork for understanding all biological and chemical relationships. SC 09 includes Science Processes, Life Science, Earth Science,
and Chemistry. SC 09 may include dissection.

Biology
*SC 49 Biology
Grade 9 only Difficulty: High
All junior high schools 2 Sem.—1 Cr.
Prerequisites: See counselor for prerequisite
Major areas of study are cell structure, function and processes, genetics, classification, microbiology, plants, animals, human systems and ecology. Lab activities may include dissections. Fulfills college entrance and district graduation requirements only for 9th graders. Specifically designed for pre-science majors whose grades and educational plans qualify them for this rigorous course. Full requirement information for 9th graders is available through the counselors’ office. This course includes the topics of human reproduction and evolution. This course may include dissection.
